Our Small Lot Collection wines are our chance to show what Bell Mountain can produce and gives us flexibility to experiment in the winery and vineyards. For years, we’ve been wanting to try our hand at a barrel fermented Sauvignon Blanc.
The 2018 Newcomb Sauvignon Blanc displays stone fruit aromas of nectarine and white peach that we often find in white Bordeaux, backed up by tropical aromas of mango and lychee, with subtle high notes of honeysuckle and lemongrass. On the palate this wine comes alive with lively acidity and a round sleekness ending with a lingering stone fruit finish. We fermented and aged this wine entirely in barrels and for the first time used a small amount of acacia wood which added dynamic tension and excitement to the wine.
What we’ve crafted is not a shy Sauvignon Blanc. Therefore, we wanted to give it a name that represents its uniqueness and ambition to do something that stands out. Therefore, we named Newcomb for the Women’s College of Tulane University in New Orleans where founders Chris James and Ames Morison graduated. This wine is a nod to class after class of intelligent women leaders who go on to be bold in their careers and lives.
The winter gave us less rainfall than normal with almost all of the precipitation came in the early spring so the vineyard had a full profile of water to start the growing season. We saw good early growth, a few warm periods, but no severe heat spikes. The key ripening period in late summer and early fall was cool and sunny, delaying harvest by a week but allowing full flavor development. We were blessed with a vintage we always dream about: abundant fruit of excellent quality.
