The 2010 growing season was one of the most challenging we’ve ever experienced. A cold spring followed by late summer heat spikes and early fall rains forced us to work tirelessly in the vineyard to coax the best out of our vines. After working with these vines for so many years, our vineyard crew has come to know them intimately and almost sense what they need – a sip of water here, one or two fewer clusters over there. That in-depth knowledge of our vineyard really came in handy in 2010, allowing us to anticipate and act quickly throughout the difficult vintage.
The more we farm, the more we learn about the individual attributes of each of our vineyard blocks. Our Kate’s and B’s blocks exemplify classic Cabernet territory: high-density vine spacing, steep hillsides of rock and clay, and low yields of small, inky-black berries. The unique character of the fruit from these blocks stands out every year as worthy of its own special bottling, and the namesake of Ames’ and Chris’ wives, Kate and B.
